Snow & Winter Safety

During the snow and ice conditions, the City of Port Coquitlam works extra hard to maintain a safe city for residents and visitors. This includes snow removal and ice control measures as well as resources to assist your family to prepare for emergency situations.

Local residents and businesses also have a role to play in snowy weather. Port Coquitlam bylaws require occupants of single-family, multi-family, industrial and commercial buildings to clear sidewalks next to their property of snow and ice as soon as possible after a snowfall, to ensure they are safe for pedestrians.

The links and information below are provided to assist you and your family to keep safe this winter season:
Snow Removal on Sidewalks
We are reminding everyone this winter that as a responsible neighbour and citizen, it is important to clear sidewalks so everyone, and in particular people with limited mobility such as the elderly and disabled, those who use motorized scooters, or mothers with strollers, can safely get to their destination.

It is the responsibility of all owners or occupiers of property, including the City, to clear ice and snow from the sidewalks bordering the property within 10 hours of the cessation of any snowfall or ice storm. Please remember this is a continuing obligation, and that snow and ice must be re-cleared should it re-accumulate.

The City coordinates a volunteer Snow Angels program that makes volunteers available to residents who have difficulties clearing snow and ice from their sidewalks.

But even if you do not sign up for the program, you can still be a Snow Angel by helping clear away snow on a neighbour’s property if they can’t do it themselves. Right now, before a storm arrives, check with others on your street to see if anyone who is elderly or has limited mobility issues may need help clearing their sidewalk.

Other Snow-Smart Tips

  • Keep children safe: don’t let them play in snow piles or roadside snowbanks.
  • Parked vehicles hamper snowplows; if possible, don’t park on the street after it snows.
  • When shoveling snow, pile it on your property – not on the sidewalk or street.
  • Clear snow and ice away from storm sewer catchbasins to allow the melted snow to reach the storm sewer. When catchbasins are blocked, street flooding can occur, turning the street into an ice rink when the temperature drops.
