    Mayor's Message - 2012 Summer Leisure Guide

Summer 2012 is no exception for things that the City has planned to make this season interesting and memorable!

Port Coquitlam’s Parks & Recreation staff have been busy planning a fun and busy season, starting with the Farmer’s Market that will take place every Thursday from 3 pm to 7 pm at Leigh Square until September 27th.   I would like to encourage everyone to come out and see what Port Coquitlam has to offer and support our local vendors so that we can enjoy this annual event each and every year.

There are plenty of additional outdoor and indoor activities including Music in the Park, which takes place every Sunday during July and August in Lions Park and a wide variety of art exhibits that will be featured at Leigh Square Community Arts Village.

We hope to see everyone embracing their Canadian pride and coming together as a community on Canada Day in Castle Park!  Come out and meet Port Coquitlam’s 2012 May Queen and Ambassador who will be there to help me serve up Canada’s birthday cake to everyone.

There are also plenty of additional programs that fill the pages of this guide that will continue throughout the summer months.  From day and summer camps for kids to individual or family-focused programs, there really is something to suit every budget, age and interest.

Continual updates about what is going on in your community this summer are available on our website, e-updates, the City’s Facebook page and Twitter.  Check out my blogs from time to time and let us know what you think.

Wishing you all a safe and happy summer in 2012!

    Mayor's Message - 2012 May Day Festival

PoCo Pride is a chance to celebrate the many great aspects of our community and our City’s May Day Celebrations are certainly no exception.

This year our May Day Festival commemorates its 89th year.  We will be gearing up for our City’s 100th Birthday next year!

The tradition of May Day began in Port Coquitlam in 1923.  We are pleased with all the growth and change that has taken place in our community but proud that many of our rituals and traditions have remained the same.

If you have a long history in Port Coquitlam, you will likely know someone that was a former May Queen or perhaps you were a member of the Royal Party or a Maypole Dancer.  These traditions are very special to Port Coquitlam and ones that we embrace with pride!

We will begin our festivities with the Opening Ceremonies at 7:30 pm on Friday, May 4th in the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex.  It is the beginning of an action-packed week that is geared for the entire family!

The final day of our 89th May Day Festival will celebrate our mothers during Mother’s Day in Lions Park starting with a pancake breakfast provided by Port Coquitlam’s Kinsmen along with activities throughout the day including the traditional Maypole Dances.

What is a celebration without a parade?  The Port Coquitlam Rotary May Day Parade will begin at 11 am on Saturday, May 12th.  The parade route and further details about activities that are taking place throughout the week are available on our City’s website at www.portcoquitlam.ca/mayday.

Our City’s May Day Task Force has worked extremely hard with the parks and recreation staff to make this year’s May Day Festival one that you will all enjoy!!

On behalf of Port Coquitlam City Council, we invite you to join in the fun this May Day and feel the pride!

    Are we a Compassionate City?

Last week I attended a workshop entitled: Making Your City Compassionate. The workshop was put on by The Greater Vancouver Compassionate Society. The basis for their work is on making connections, thus creating connections allows members of society to know and understand what others are going through and if you understand others you are more likely to be compassionate about their circumstances and your decisions.

They provide a few examples of initiatives, such as promoting volunteering, bridging divides between neighbourhoods and modeling civil disclosure. The bottom line for many of these examples is creating connections to better society.

I have always been interested in how we make our community connected and thinking of each other in the way we govern and our role as residents. Over the years I have been researching on ways to help facilitate a connected community. I believe that a connected community is not only a compassionate community but a happy community. Much of the research has been around creating a Happy community, see my prior blog post .

I am proud of the work we have done over the years to create a connected community. In our last community survey we found out that 40% of our residents volunteer in our community and over 50% of our businesses donated time or resources to our community. According to Volunteer Canada  33% of Canadians volunteer. I believe that this high level of community participation leads to a happy community and a community that despite our population growth we can maintain our small town charm.

This is a work in progress, I am continuing to do more research and understand how we can create a more compassionate and happy community.

2012 to 2016 Budget Open House

Port Coquitlam City Council would like your feedback on the proposed budget. Please come out and see what is planned and what lies ahead in the future. You’ll have a better understanding of what City services are provided and how they are delivered. We will be focusing on our budget for 2012 to 2016 so it is important that you are involved in the process.

I would like to invite all of you to come out and find out what is happening in your community. The Open House will take place on Saturday, March 10th from 9 am to 12 noon at Wilson Centre, located at 2150 Wilson Avenue. We hope to see you there!

    Stop Bullying Day

On February 29th, I would like to encourage all of you to join the City of Port Coquitlam in ‘Stop Bullying Day’.

Let’s put an end to bullying, in our community and everywhere. Bullying has no borders or boundaries. We must all work together to raise awareness and educate people about the impacts of what bullying is, what it does, and why it has to stop.

Please join all of us in ‘Stop Bullying Day’ on February 29th!  There are many ways you can raise awareness and show support. Wear a pink shirt, purchase a pink ‘stop bullying’ bracelet from our two youth centres for a loonie to help fund bullying awareness programming, organize events and activities during school to raise awareness, encourage discussion about what bullying behaviour is and how to put an end to it.

There are many ways to promote this very important campaign and I hope you will join all of us in Port Coquitlam to ‘Stop Bullying’.

Volunteer Recognition - Call for Nominations

Each year the City of Port Coquitlam recognizes the many volunteers that make our community a better place for all of us to live, work and play. Our community would not have as many activities for all of us to enjoy without the support and commitment of our volunteers, it’s just that simple. We rely on assistance from our volunteers for our May Day Festival, Canada Day, and our Rivers & Trails Festival through a variety of committees, and that’s just to name a few. This year, the volunteers on our Spirit Committee just finished a week of activities to keep us all busy and now they are gearing up for our 100 birthday celebration in 2013.

This year’s theme at the Volunteer Recognition Awards on April 17th is ‘The Stars of Our Community’. Please help us recognize all the stars in our community and nominate someone that you know that makes our community a better place. Nominations can be done online  or you can pick up a nomination form at one of our City facilities. The nomination deadline is Friday, March 9th so please nominate someone you know that is a star in our community so we can let them know how special they are to all of us.
